To support the tourism economic recovery, post the COVID-19 pandemic, this iconic project - initiated by Cairns Regional Council for the Cairns CBD - creates an extensive publicly engaged dining layout – the New Esplanade Dining Precinct.
The scheme provides new contemporary designed awnings with improved weather protection and extended dining areas - seamlessly integrating with the new roadways, pathways and landscaping.
Field Construct was commissioned by Cairns Regional Council to provide early contractor contribution in the development of the project design drawings and specifications for these new awning structures – significantly spanning footpath and commercial/ public dining areas. In addition, Field Construct was also appointed to undertake the demolition and construction works in accordance with the design drawings on the project.
The awning structures design integrates unique and custom finishes to create a uniform appearance throughout the precinct while providing each commercial dining operator with individuality and overcomes a myriad of design challenges in a public use space. Cairns Regional Council’s decision to ‘fast-track’ this project to take advantage of a weakened tourism season (due to the pandemic) also presented complex challenges through overlapping numerous design and construction activities in a compressed delivery timeframe.
